In 1948, four hundred copies of an explosive manifesto appeared secretly in Quebec: Refus global, which paints a portrait of a bigoted and withdrawn society, and calls, in virtuoso language, for a poetic revolution. Borduas denounces the fears that surround individuals and calls for a poetic and anthropological revolt to give birth to a "new collective hope".
